TRANSPORT OF ION SOURCE FROM CATANIA TO LUND
In Lund, a very special traveler was welcomed, namely an ion source from National Laboratories of the South , Italy. The ion source is a plant that produces positive or negative ions intended for, among other things, particle accelerators.

All the way from Catania on the island of Sicily, the ion source travelled a long 2500 km to its new home: the European Spallation Source ERIC research facility in Lund, Sweden. The delivery of the ion source is one step in the construction of the world’s most powerful neutron source.
THE TRANSPORT WAS PLANNED RIGHT DOWN TO THE SMALLEST DETAIL
Transporting an ion source is a task requiring carefully detailed planning and a major focus on safety. Prior to the transport, MTAB conducted an investigation together with the client, where we decided upon the best possible wrapping and packing method. The freight and route were planned in detail.
The most sensitive parts of the equipment were fitted with vibration and shock alarms that were monitored via GPS throughout the journey. The alarm status was constantly monitored during the transport. The driver had a separate alarm set up in the cabin. If an alarm was triggered, an instruction was given to stop the vehicle, inspect the freight attachment and stay in contact with the laboratory in Sicily. Parts of the world-famous Terracotta Army from China were on display at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm throughout 2011. This exhibition was unique as it was displayed in a quite spectacular setting, also included more recent finds from similar burial sites. More than 350 000 visitors saw the exhibition.
